How to floss properly: Step-by-step guide for the beginner

"And never forget to brush your teeth after every meal!".

That's what our parents taught us as children, right?

It's true that we do need to brush our teeth 30 min after our food if we want to have a healthy smile, but who will take care of the food particles between the teeth and gum?

Please remember: flossing at least once a day is vital for your oral hygiene to avoid the build-up of plaque and tartar. It significantly reduces the risk of developing cavities and periodontal disease.

Many people who suffer from sensitive or bleeding gums may be tempted to avoid flossing for fear of making their bleeding gums worse. But in fact, flossing can improve the health of your gums, thereby helping to prevent them from bleeding.

So if you want to avoid future and more significant problems, check this easy-to-follow guide on how to floss correctly.

Step-by-step instructions:

  1. Break off about 18 inches of floss. Wind most of the floss around the middle finger of your dominant hand, leave aside two or three inches, and wind the rest of it around the opposite middle finger.

  2. Hold about one inch of the floss tightly between your thumbs and forefingers.

  3. Gently insert the floss between the teeth. Try to do it as carefully as you can - if not, it will only hurt your gums.

  4. Rub the floss smoothly up and down against each tooth. When you are reaching the gum line, pay special attention to avoid hurting the tissue.

  5. Repeat the process in all teeth. This is something to highlight: most people focus only on the front teeth and forget about the back ones. If you want to keep your mouth healthy, it's vital to floss one by one each tooth every time you do it.

Should I floss before or after brushing?

Well, although it may seem an irrelevant detail, all dentists agree that it's better to floss after brushing. When flossing, dental plaque can stick to the teeth' front surface, so it's always advisable to use your toothbrush afterwards to remove these particles.
